album review: Majid Jordan – A Place Like This EP

With each new signing to Drake’s October’s Very Own brand, his Toronto-rooted sphere of influence continues to expand.  Whereas the boss prides himself on the honesty of his music “leaving him too exposed”, the duo of Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman (better known as Majid Jordan) revel in their anonymity and seclusion.  Building off their Nothing Was The Same cameo, the pair of Canadians opt for an injection of pop on a grander scale for their latest, A Place Like This.  “Forever” and “All I Do” open the extended play on a groovy, up-tempo note.

The former mid tempo, littered with breathy moans, tackle a rampant feeling of addiction that infatuation can blossom into while the latter adopts more of the spacey atmosphere made famous on Drake’s So Far Gone.  Oddly, “All I Do” also shifts the tempo upwards, particularly for an obsessive lament of lost love.  The twosome dabbles amid rhythm & blues, similar to those featured on their freshman outing, afterhours.  “Her” acts as a companion piece to the previous track before “U” journeys through a bout with depression as Majid Jordan builds on OVO’s atmospheric aesthetic.  While other artists opt for quantity, Majid Jordan’s emphasis is on quality with A Place Like This, a concise appetizer and taste of things to come.
